Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience “Tergiversation” (Video)

September 15, 2009

Tergiversation is a song by Gene Perla. Perla was a bass player who performed with legendary drummer Elvin Jones for many years. Tergiversation is a term that describes an evasion of straightforward action of clear-cut statement. Perla dedicated the song to jazz legend Miles Davis, a tergiversationist if there ever was one, who often turned his back towards the audience as he played. Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience bring these internal jazz dedications and conversations to a new audience.

MichiganHipHop.com Joins The MOG Music Network

September 11, 2009

Readers,

Thanks for all of your support! You may notice that instead of the regular Google AdSense ads, that the site has some new ads at the top and bottom of the site. That’s because MichiganHipHop.com is the latest addition to The MOG Network!

For those unfamiliar, the MOG Network has thousands of contributions from music lovers and the top 300 music blogs. It generates over 6,000 music blog posts per week, all hand-curated to deliver the web’s best daily music newspaper.

Now that we are a part of this network, MichiganHipHop.com’s posts will be exposed to the monthly 5.5 million unique visitors that hit up MOG for the latest in music. Secondly, our new ad revenue will help pay for the hosting costs necessary to keep the site up and running. All of this is going to help with MichiganHipHop’s mission: to support and document the state’s burgeoning Hip Hop scene.

We’ve got lots more in store for the site in the near future, but we’ll let you know about that as it happens.

Once again, thanks for all your support!

Sincerely,

William E. Ketchum III and M.O.S. Ologist

Detroit CYDI Interview

RESIZEDetroitCYDI-4What started in high school with simple rhymes on lunchroom table beats has turned into much more for rap trio Detroit CYDI. Comprised of Rufio Jones, Sean Uppercut and Illingsworth, these 20-somethings have been together for several years now and released their EP The Rhyming Dictionary on Christmas in 2008. Influenced by the 90’s hip-hop era, they bring a classic approach to modern times. The group opened up to MichiganHipHop about how they started, what they are all about and what they believe is missing in today’s rap/hip-hop music.

How did you all meet?
Illingsworth: Rufio and I met at the six-mile bus stop; and Rufio and Sean were in the same Renaissance class together. It wasn’t until we were going to lunch and doing lunchroom cyphers when things really popped off.

Rufio Jones: Well, we were The Illiance in high school, back in 1999/2000. Then that like split off and paired down into Detroit CYDI; we still work with everyone but we’ve been together for about 3 or 4 years. Continue reading →
