P.L. Wins T-Pain “Motivated” Contest

January 17, 2011

After years of singles such as “Fresher Den U” on Detroit radio, Terry “P.L.” Fox’s state-wide fan base has helped him open a national opportunity. On January 16, P.L. was announced as the winner of a contest that will land him on two projects by multiplatinum artist T-Pain.

“I’ve always been up on T-Pain’s music, ever since his “I’m Sprung” joint when he was getting slandered for [his use of] autotune,” P.L. beamed to MichiganHipHop. “I’m legitimately a fan of his work and success, so this is crazy.”
T-Pain launched the contest on December 14, 2010, by uploading an incomplete song entitled “Motivated.”
Contestants were instructed to write and record original verses over an empty space on the song, and to promote them as much as possible with their social networks and media outlets. The artist who achieved the most visibility would land their version of “Motivated” on T-Pain’s Prevolver: The Mixtape, along with earning a verse on T-Pain’s upcoming studio album.
P.L. remembers finding out about the contest from a friend late at night while playing video games. He immediately watched the video, downloaded the song, and wrote and recorded his verse in his home studio.
“I approached the verse pretty aggressively, because I knew how big this could be and how many people would enter,” P.L. admits. “I just made sure I had presence and switched my flow a few times.”
Pushing the song to his Facebook friends, Twitter followers and radio connections, P.L.’s version of “Motivated” garnered over 68,000 YouTube views. T-Pain uploaded a video on January 16 that announced P.L. as the winner, and P.L. told MichiganHipHop that a producer from Nappy Boy, T-Pain’s label, has personally contacted him.
Along with having singles in Detroit radio, P.L. has previously tasted national spotlight as a champion on “Freestyle Friday,” a battle rapping segment on Black Entertainment Television’s weekly music video show “106 & Park.” P.L. insists that despite the major victory, his goals for 2011 haven’t changed.
“I plan on signing a major deal later this year if everything works out,” P.L. says. “I tried not to set new goals based on this opportunity; I wanted this opportunity to help me reach my goals that were already set. That’s exactly where I think things are headed.”
