J-Dilla.com Relaunches, J Dilla Foundation Established

January 25, 2010

It’s been nearly half of a decade, but today seems like the beginning of James “J Dilla” Yancey’s legacy being handled by the people that loved him most: his family.

J-Dilla.com officially re-launched today, announcing that Yancey’s estate is now administered by West Coast probate attorney Alex Borden, and that the J Dilla Foundation has been established. As the site reports, “The developments mark a new chapter in preserving and enhancing the legacy of the legendary artist and secure a means of future prosperity for his mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, daughters Ja’Mya Yancey and Ty-Monae Whitlow, and brother, John “Illa J” Yancey.

Since Yancey’s death four years ago due to complications from lupus, family, friends and collaborators around the country have conducted fundraisers to gather money for leftover medical bills and the financial support of his mother. But a January 2009 article in Vibe magazine [click here] reported that due to Yancey’s outstanding tax debt, Ma Dukes hadn’t received any money from such memorials.

These new developments have enabled the establishment of the J Dilla Foundation, which has filed for tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status to qualify it as a non-profit charitable institution. The site states that the organization is built to “help fund the development of music in the inner city, and provide scholarships to students enrolled at schools with progressive music curricula.” Additionally, the web site will serve as official representation for Dilla, and contact for anyone wishing to conduct business with his name or music.

“Every year, Dilla and his dream get bigger and bigger,” says Ma Dukes. “Every time I go to a different city and visit with his fans, the dream just grows. It’s something that I can’t even describe, and it’s not going to die.”
