Last Week in Michigan Hip Hop

May 9, 2008

This past week, the mitten had some great hip-hop events go down: Respiration’s two-year anniversary in Lansing, a Binary Star show in Detroit, and The Roots’ Official Detroit Listening Party at Confidential Lounge. Follow the jump for rundowns and pictures:

The Roots Official Listening Party
Immediately following their concert at Fox Theatre with Erykah Badu, the Legendary Roots Crew stopped by Detroit’s Confidential Lounge to rock an afterparty with the city. The night started with Octane (of Octane & Illite) DJing on his own, before Questlove and Black Thought came through. Black performed several of the group’s seminal hits along with selections from the new album Rising Down, and ?uestlove murdered the tables till about 3 A.M. A classic in true Roots and Michigan Hip-Hop fashion. Photos: William E. Ketchum III

Respiration Two-Year Anniversary
Respiration, Lansing’s monthly Hip-Hop night hosted and booked by the duo of F.O.S., celebrated its two-year anniversary last week. This month’s show embodied everything that the event is about, boasting a who’s who of Michigan’s underground hip-hop scene: Othello, Tasherre D’Enajetic, Octane & Illite, Magestik Legend, P.H.I.L.T.H.Y., RideOut, 3rd Deggree, Sincere and F.O.S. themselves, along with newcomers The Optimist and The Amateur. Binary Star
There was also a Binary Star show at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit. Even though no MichiganHipHop.com representatives attended—hence the lack of photos—the duo of One Be Lo and Senim Silla is never to be missed. The legendary pair was joined by Jay Spliff, Alf-1, Steelo, and the Dubphonics.
