Frank Nitty “Automatic”

May 9, 2008

Frank Nitty on “Automatic,” the first single from “The Concert Hall EP,” a project with Young RJ and Craig Lane:
I just felt it was a strong record. I ain’t necessarily looking for “singles;” if it’s got a good hook, it’s a single. I’m looking for strong music that’s well put together … and this record felt friendly enough, and still musical enough at the same time.

(The album is) very musical and very big, it’s a grand sound. We use a lot of live instrumentation, live guitars. RJ and Craig are very musical, and when I explained to them where I wanted to go… what I’m doing is the Concert Hall EP. It’s a prelude of an album that’s designed to be in big places. This music is based more on the music. What I’m rhyming about is a lot of personal shit for myself, but I was really more focused on where the music was taking me. This is designed for stadiums, to give you that 80s feel, late 80s early 90s. Hip-hop was doing stadiums, it wasn’t regulated like it is now. I was used to seeing Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Curtis Blow, I was used to seeing all these people in stadiums, not in clubs. I was trying to make music that fit that.
